Men's Golf - Match Highlights 2009

State Championship

Sierra View CC, Roseville. Par 72, 6488 Yards

Sierra Finishes Fourth at State!

Sierra improves on the past two year State Championships tournaments with a respectable fourth place finish. Capping off a fantastic year, the men of Sierra College Golf’s vision of “ROCKING” at this years State Championship came up a little short.

Winner Fresno City’s 8 under par 712 dominated the field as the rest of the field was battling for second place.

Veterans Kevin Lucas 6th place 72-69 and Stephen Edman 71-70 played solid golf but it wasn’t to carry the other Wolverines.

“14 shots back, we had to go low and get into red figures for the afternoon round to have a chance. It got very exciting as Kyle Chatelain’s birdie on number ten put him at 6 under through 10 holes coupled with Stephen, Kevin and Ryan Miller’s under par golf put the team in a position to break par and sneak into a medal position. The guys hung tough and fought back with three of six scores under par but it just wasn’t enough” said Coach Hovancsek.

It was great year achieving our goals of winning Conference and Nor Cal Championships for the third straight time. This will be a year to remember as I am very proud of the guy’s effort to work hard and improve throughout the course of the season.

We will miss the leadership AJ Hasegawa, Stephen Edman and Kevin Lucas offered and wish them well as they move onto the next chapter of their young lives. We already started our quest for “Four in a Row” and I feel confident with our core returnees along with some top recruits, Sierra College Men’s Golf will continue its winning ways.

Go Wolverines!

Sierra Wins Third Straight NorCal Championship!

The Sierra College Men’s Golf team captures it’s third straight NorCal Championship. Peaking towards Championship play, the Wolverines are on track to achieve their goal of a State Championship.

Since day one, the men wanted to “Rock this Season”! Led by Kevin Lucas’s Medalist performance of 67-70 and second place winner Ryan Miller 72-71 along with the balanced scoring of Freshman Kyle Chatelain 73-76 and Eric McIntosh 77-72, their 728 team total dominated the field by a 23 shot margin over second place Fresno City College 751.

Another Big 8 Conference school, Santa Rosa 754 placed third to qualify for State and Chabot College 757 nipped Cabrillo College 756 by one shot to capture the last State qualifying spot. For our hard-working Sophomores Stephen Edman, A J Hasegawa and Kevin Lucas, this will be their last competition as a Wolverine. Big 8 Tournament 12

Catta Verdera Country Club, Lincoln, CA. Par 72, 6790 Yards

Sierra Wins Third Straight Big 8 Conference Championship!

Coach Tim Hovancsek, named Big 8 Conference Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season!

The Sierra College Men’s Golf team captures it’s third straight Big 8 Conference Championship. Playing solid golf down the stretch, the Wolverines won the last two league tournaments to over take arch rival Santa Rosa. Led by freshman Kyle Chatelain’s 74 and the balanced scoring of Kevin Lucas and Ryan Miller’s 75’s and two- time League MVP Stephen Edman and Eric McIntosh 76’s, their 376 team total dominated second place Delta 381 and third place Santa Rosa 385.

Accomplishing one of many goals, the guys are peaking at the right time and look to defend their Nor Cal Championship next week at the Mira Vista Country Club in El Cerrito, California.

An up and down year, I am really proud of the men’s effort in stepping up their games. The future looks bright as freshman Ryan Miller and Eric McIntosh have earned valuable experience and Kyle Chatelain’s solid play vaulted him into “All League” honors. They have big shoes to fill, as we are loosing two-time League MVP Stephen Edman and two-time All League AJ Hasegawa and Kevin Lucas.

But before these Champions move on to their next chapter of their young careers, we have more work to do! Next is to defend our NorCal Championship title and hopefully we will “ROCK” in winning a State Championship at hometown Sierra View Country Club.

On Monday, May 4 we travel to Mira Vista Country Club to defend our Nor Cal Championship.

Lucas Leads the Wolverines to Victory

Sierra’s Kevin Lucas three under par 69 leads the Wolverines 373 to a decisive 18 stroke victory over second place Santa Rosa 391. After three straight second place finishes, all the men stepped up to win their third Big 8 Conference Tournament. Veteran AJ Hasegawa 73 and rookie Kyle Chatelain 74 continued fine play coupled with Kevin’s “red” number helped picked up the slack of team leader Stephen Edman’s 79. It was a little tense but when Freshman Eric McIntosh and Ryan Miller came in with 78, 79 respectfully, the deal was done.

The men are in a forward lean and will be prepared to bring home our third Big 8 Conference Championship.

Silverado North Resort, Napa, CA. Par 72, 6900 Yards

Sierra Holds a Slim Lead

The Sierra College Men’s Golf Team score of 370 would have been good enough to win the last 6 Tournaments, but today, they ran into the fantastic scoring of Santa Rosa 361. Finishing second for the third straight event, the Wolverines hold a slim 2 point advantage over the Bear Cubs.

Sierra’s Stephen Edman and Kevin Lucas continue to hold the top two spots in league scoring. Stephen’s two under par 70 just about seals up his second Big 8 Conference MVP award, a record in the history of Sierra Golf. Freshman Kyle Chatelain and Eric McIntosh are trending in the right direction as we move into post season play. I’m also pleased to see AJ Hasegawa (“Yoshi”) back to his all-league winning ways. With two league tournaments left, the guys will be working hard to retain our lead.

Spring Creek CC, Ripon, CA. Par 72, 6461 Yards

Sierra is Back on Top

With the Wolverines second place finish and Santa Rosa’s slide to fifth place, Sierra recaptures a 4 point lead at the top of Big 8 Conference play. Again, led by Stephen Edman and Kevin Lucas excellent 2 under par rounds of 70 and the resurgence of AJ Hasegawa's 75 and Kyle Chatelain's 76, Sierra’s 373 total fell 1 shot short of Delta's 372 winning score.

Today, we got a huge break when Modesto 385 and Butte 387 fine play finished ahead of Santa Rosa 388. Most important, the guys are peaking at the right time and returning to the form we started the year. Our goal is to continue to improve, stay focused and bring home our third straight Big 8 Conference Championship.

Sierra Finishes Second in Stockton

Mother Nature and her mighty winds play havoc again! Team leaders Stephen Edman and Kevin Lucas’s excellent rounds of 75 weren’t enough to over take Santa Rosa’s consistent team play of 395. The Wolverines 403 second place finish keeps us within striking distance, 2 points out of first. Thursday we travel to Spring Creek in Ripon and look for a total team “bounce-back” effort to recapture the league lead.

Sierra's Back on Top

Napa, CA- Winds of 35-40 miles an hour send scores soaring! With all 7 teams shooting 400 plus, it was about surviving! It wasn’t pretty but we achieved our goal of regaining first place. Lead by Medalist Stephen Edman’s 77, the Wolverine’s 412 placed third, 1 stroke out of second place Butte 411 and 7 behind tournament winner Delta 405. Santa Rosa finished a distant fourth at 420. Spring break couldn’t have come at a better time, the guys need some time to recharge and gain some confidence back.

Big 8 Tournament 6

De He GC, Brooks, CA. Par 72, 7133 Yards

Sierra's Miller is Medalist

Sierra Freshman Ryan Miller’s 73 was good enough for Medalist honors but not enough to overcome our slow start and the steady play of Santa Rosa's 386. The 1 stroke loss moved the Wolverines back into second place of the Big 8 Conference. Playing the new Yocha De He Golf Club at Cache Creek in Brooks, California, it was a great experience for the players to play under phenomenal “tour-like” conditions and service. Head Professional Bradley Johnson and his staff rolled out the red carpet for our young men.

With 6 tournaments remaining, we have plenty of time to right the ship. Leader Stephen Edman felt the worst about his performance and personally took responsibility of the loss. A team game, I was pleased with the way the whole team rallied around him and chanted to get back to our “Championship” ways. We will be back!

Edman and Lucas Go "Red" for Sierra Victory!

Stephen Edman 70 and Kevin Lucas 71 go under par (red numbers on scoreboard) to lead Sierra to a 21 stroke victory over host Modesto's 396. Playing again on “punched” and heavy “sanded” greens, the men hung tough with excellent ball-striking. With winds howling up to 40 miles an hour, I was pleased how the men struck the ball. Freshman Shane Smith continues to improve, placing 3rd with his 75. The balance of scoring came from Ryan Miller 80 and A J Hasegawa 81. We accomplished our goal of “fairways and greens” and charting the course. We will be ready to get back to the “360’s” when we return on April 16th.

Aided by 195 Yard Ace, Lucas Scores 72 for Sierra Victory!

Kevin Lucas scored his second hole-in-one of the season on the demanding 195 yard par 3 sixteenth hole at the Silverado North Golf Club. His even par 72 led the Wolverine’s to a dominating 21 stroke victory margin over Butte 394, Delta 404 and host Napa Valley 413. I was pleased with our 373 score and the consistency of our play. Playing on “punched” greens again, the guys hung tough with excellent ball-striking counting scores of Stephen Edman 76, A J Hasegawa 75, Kyle Chatelain 76 and continued strong play from Freshman Shane Smith 74.

Edman's 67 Leads Wolverines to Victory

Veteran Stephen Edman’s 4 under par 67 leads the Wolverine Men’s Golf team to a whopping 17 stroke victory margin over Santa Rosa 382, host Delta 395 and Napa Valley 426. Under clear blue skies, the guys got back to our “360’s” goal, shooting a 365 on the tight Elkhorn Country Club. Kevin Lucas returned to solid play with his 72. Freshman Shane Smith continued his improved play with a 74 while Kyle Chatelain and Ryan Miller completed the team total with 76’s.

Big 8 Tournament 5

Bidwell Park GC, Chico, CA. Par 72, 6366 Yards

Sierra Wins, Regains Conference Lead

The solid play of Sierra College out dueled Santa Rosa, winning by 1 stroke, 372 to 373. The 1 stroke victory moved the Wolverines back on top of the Big 8 Conference. Frustrated by the freshly punched greens, I was proud of the guy’s fantastic ball striking. With a little “bit of luck” of the Irish, a bounce here or there on the greens would of made a huge difference.

Lead by Stephen Edman’s 2 under par 70 and solid play from Sophomores Kyle Chatelain and Shane Smith’s 75s along with veterans Kevin Lucas 74 and AJ Hasegawa 78 was just enough to get the job done. With Stephen’s 2 under round, he moves into first place with the only under par scoring average.

We have two weeks before our next League match at the new Yocha De He Golf Club. We will be working hard to keep our “forward lean” and focus to secure the league race. Sierra travels Thursday to Elkhorn Country Club in Stockton for a practice match.

North-South Invitational

Hunter Ranch Golf Club, Paso Robles, CA. Par 72, 6829 Yards

Sierra College Places 4th at North-South Invitational

Sierra College had a fairly successful trip to the beautiful Hunter Ranch Golf Club. Struggling on the firm fast greens on day one, we didn’t have the start we had intended. Our 394 left us 21 strokes off the pace and near the bottom of field. With all the other teams taking off, the guys decided to stick around the course and work on their game; we had a great 2 hour short game practice! This trip was about scouting the Southern competition and team bonding. I was proud of the guy’s hard work and bonding. The practice paid off as we rebounded to finish fourth. Team leader and ’07 League MVP Stephen Edman had a great chance to bring home some hardware but his 145 total finish just 2 shots out of first place. Our “bounce back” kid, Ryan Miller did it again, bouncing back from an 87 with a second round 74 birdying 4 of his last 7 holes.

Sierra Slips to Second Place

Sierra College Men’s Golf slipped to second place in the Big 8 Conference as Santa Rosa took full advantage of home course advantage with a 3 under par 357 total. Sierra 377 finished second despite not having it’s “A” game. Lead by AJ Hasegawa’s second consecutive 2 under par 70 and Stephen Edman’s even par 72, it just wasn’t enough to pick up the 80’s of bottom of line up. Kevin Lucas’s 75 helped retain his standings (first in league). This year’s league is much stronger and deeper and it’s going to take a total team effort to stay on top. Sierra travels down to Paso Robles to play in the North-South Invitational.

Hard Lesson Learned

Sierra College Men’s Golf went from a 6 stroke victory to a 384 third place finish by a simple mis-stroke of a pen. The men learned a hard lesson today when Kevin Lucas took the word of his fellow competitor for a 76 score (which is what he shot) but didn’t check the scorecard for hole by hole accuracy, an error was found and Kevin was disqualified. This definitely set us back but the guys made a run lead by AJ Hasegawa’s career round 2 under par 70 and Stephen Edmans 73. Ryan Miller bounced back from a slow start for a solid 77. Counting two scores in the 80’s made room for Butte 382 and Santa Rosa 383 to sneak past us thus creating a three way tie for first place in the Big 8 Conference with 24 points each.

No one feels worse than Kevin and we feel for him but like any mistake, we will learn from it and be a stronger team down the stretch. The guys are over the mishap and looking forward to settling the score at Tuesday’s Windsor event.

Veteran A J Hasegawa’s solid even par 72 wins Medalist honors making 5 of 6 for the Wolverines. Shooting our highest total of the year, 384, the team’s “B” game was still 16 shots better than second place Delta 400. Third place went to Butte with 405. The challenging Morgan Creek was the real winner today! I knew it was going to be tough for the guys to continue their torrid pace at Morgan but was pleased with their effort to grind out a challenging day.

Sierra College Men's Golf Wins by 15 Shots

Sierra College Men’s Golf shot a record 9 under par 351 total to win its opening Big 8 League tournament over runner up Santa Rosa Junior College 366. Led by Sierra’s Kevin Lucas solid 66, (2nd time Medalist) and MVP Stephen Edman’s 68, the Wolverines built a commanding 10 under par total. Under clear blue skies and absolute perfect conditions at the championship Stanford Golf Club, Sierra College Men’s Golf team started their 2009 season “on fire”! Led by returning 2007 MVP Stephen Edman’s 4 under par 66, the Wolverines dominated the field winning by 10 shots over second place Santa Rosa 362. The record low Tournament score 352 was aided by Folsom High, Monterey Peninsula College transfer Kevin Lucas 70 and returning “All League” AJ Hasegawa 71. Coach Hovancsek was really pleased by the opening efforts of Freshman Ryan Miller 72, Shane Smith 73 and Kyle Chatelain’s 75.

After 2 very successful seasons winning “Back to Back” Conference and Nor Cal Championships, the men have dedicated themselves to improve everyday in the class room and on the course. This group of young men has an excellent chance to make Sierra College Golf history by bringing home a State Championship. “Let’s Rock” is our goal! “I like our chances” says coach Hovancsek.
