The Sierra College Political Science Club has the rare opportunity to attend the United States Presidential Inauguration in Washington D.C. in January, 2013, if they can get some financial help to get there.

The trip, which has been planned by the club members, will send eight students, accompanied by their faculty adviser to D.C., to attend the Inauguration, the Inaugural Parade, tour museums, memorials, government facilities, and meet with several California Senators and Representatives, including Senator Feinstein, Senator Boxer and Representative McClintock. The cost per student for the trip is estimated at $1,000. The trip is scheduled for January 17-23, 2013.

Sydney Rothman, club member, said “The club is ecstatic to have this opportunity and we’re working very hard to fundraise for the trip. Community donations would be incredibly appreciated and are 100% tax-deductible. Donors will be proudly acknowledged as trip sponsors.”

The largest portion of the Sierra College student population is part of the generation referred to as the Millennials—those born between 1980 and 2000—this age group made up one-fourth of the voting-age American public in this past election. This generation, numbering 46 million, surpasses the 39-million-strong block of voters over the age of 65. The future of our United States is in the hands (and vote) of the youth. The importance of inspiring young Americans to enter into the political arena is essential for the strength of the Nation. Young politicians, like their predecessors, are sure to face problems and opportunities. How they address such questions will help shape the American future. The real safeguard of democracy is education.

"Young people should be at the forefront of global change and innovation. Empowered, they can be key agents for development and peace. If, however, they are left on society's margins, all of us will be impoverished. Let us ensure that all young people have every opportunity to participate fully in the lives of their societies."
