The 37 words that changed American sports was Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972:
"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." June 23, 1972
Title IX has often been called “the biggest thing to happen to sports since the invention of the whistle.” It has been around for 40 years and shows no sign of going away. But what exactly is Title IX? How do we promote equity for women without taking opportunities away from men? What is true gender equity when it comes to educational programs—especially sports and athletics—and what role does Title IX play in promoting it?
