Walter Hix III is the Men’s Golf Coach at Sierra College, a position he’s held for more than 5 years. A respected member of the PGA of America, Hix is also a teaching professional at Whitney Oaks Golf Club (Rocklin, CA), Home Course of the Sierra College Men’s and Women’s golf teams.
Coach Hix is a long-time resident of the Greater Sacramento Region where he attended American River College and Sacramento State University. While at American River College he was a member of the men’s golf team.
After college, Hix secured his membership with the PGA 0f America (the world’s largest working sports organization) and gained experience working at a variety of public and private golf facilities including Haggin Oaks Golf Course, Serrano Country Club, Rancho Murieta Country Club and Sunset Whitney Country Club. He also served as head golf professional at Princeville Resort in Kauai, Hawaii.
Whitney Oaks Golf Club (which is owned by Thunder Valley Casino Resort), is Hix’s home course where he provides instruction to all skill levels— from beginners to advanced players. Because Coach Hix knows the future of the game is with juniors, he also provides golf camps for youth and participates in a year-round golf program that reaches out to students at local public schools.
Since giving back is important to Coach Hix, he holds an annual golf tournament which raises funds to help offset costs for the Sierra College Men’s and Women’s golf teams. He has been a supporter of the Saving Strokes Golf Program (held in conjunction with the American Heart Association) and is also a founding member of Doctor’s Orders: Play Golf, a public health education initiative that encourages folks to play golf for both enjoyment and renewed health.

"Nestled in the beautiful Sierra Nevada foothills, Whitney Oaks Golf Club provides one of the finest golf experiences in northern California. Owned by Thunder Valley Casino Resort, the experience is not only unforgettable but also represents one of the best values anywhere. Service abounds and the golf course is superbly maintained, reflecting the meticulous attention to detail.
Professional golf legend Johnny Miller and Santa Rosa golf course architect Fred Bliss designed the challenging 6,800-yard course located in Rocklin, California. Water or wetlands come into play on virtually every hole. However, with the presence of wetlands come many pleasant surprises. These natural environments are home to a multitude of animals. Migratory birds, such as mallards and geese are most common. However, raccoons, beavers, wild turkeys, coyotes and deer can also be found wandering the grounds."
