Motivational Speaker and Lawyer, Sergio Garcia will give an address as part of La Semana Latina Week

Event Details

As part of the La Semana Latina Week at the Rocklin Campus, Sergio Garcia, a Nationally recognized Lawyer, and motivational speaker will give an address on Wednesday, March 26, from 3:30 - 4:30 pm in Rm D-12.

The story of Sergio Garcia's life is inspirational. His parents brought him to the U.S. from Mexico as a baby, then returned to Mexico when he was 9. When Garcia was 17, he crossed the border without documents back into California, and has been here ever since. He graduated from high school, attended Chico State and graduated from Cal Northern School of Law in 2009. He passed the California bar on his first try, an extraordinary achievement for any law student, let alone for a man whose parents had never stepped inside a schoolroom.

Garcia was deemed morally fit by the State Bar to practice law. For two weeks, he practiced law. He had 15 Spanish-speaking clients. Then, the door to his career was quickly shut. He was told he could not have that license after all. He is not a citizen, nor even a legal resident. A 1996 federal law says state agencies can’t extend public benefits, including professional licenses, to people who are not in the country legally. “Being undocumented should not deter me from being a productive member of society and pay taxes,” Garcia said. As it turns out, he HAD applied for residency two years before that law had even passed. Garcia's application for a green card has been pending for the last 19 years, since Nov. 18, 1994. Just recently, the California Supreme Court and the Governor’s Office have paved the way for him to once again practice law in California.

Garcia has been speaking to, and inspiring young students for many years. “Even when I was in college, long before I went to law school, I would speak to high school kids to keep them motivated,” Garcia said. “When faced with insurmountable obstacles like I have been, I understand the importance of education."
