The Career Connections staff welcomes class tours, upon advanced notice. Bring (or send) your class over and we’ll take them through the variety of resources available here in Career Connections, as well as internet-based resources they can access from home in conducting their career exploration or job hunt activities. Tours are not available the first two weeks of the semester—evening tours are available pending staff scheduling. We encourage instructors to give an assignment related to career exploration or job search preparation using the resources in Career Connections. Some examples are listed below.
Career Connections conducts workshops on each subject during the semester; typically on a weekly, rotating basis. Instructors may give extra credit or another reward for students attending outside their regular class assignments. If resume writing or interviewing is part of your curriculum, a Career Connections staff member could also present in your classroom on a pre-arranged day.
Career Connections maintains a 450-member Speakers Bureau covering most careers and industries. These professionals have expressed an interest in coming into the classroom to present to our students. Career Connections can help you find, make contact with and make the arrangements for (parking, directions, etc.) a speaker of your choice. A month’s notice is typical; speakers are most comfortable speaking on their own schooling, career path and profession but other topics can be explored, pending your needs. This activity is a great way to show relevancy of your subject to the work world and expose students to people and information they would not typically encounter in your class.
A new service offered by Career Connections is the opportunity (again, with advanced notice and subject to staff availability) for us to cover your class should you need to be absent (instructor of record: Brook Oliver).
Option 1: You can select any of the above assignments or brainstorm with us to make one up that fits your specific subject. A staff member will meet your class at your room and bring them to Career Connections where we’ll take roll, conduct a tour and make the assignment (and collect it at the end, if you choose). Typical time spent in Career Connections 45-60 min. The roll sheet (and completed assignments) will be returned to you via inter-campus mail.
Option 2: We will arrange for a guest speaker (or speakers) to come to your class and give a presentation. Roll will be taken and a written synopsis of the information provided will be assigned for collection at your next class meeting. The speaker will be a Career Connections staff member conducting a Resume or Interviewing workshop.
Career Connections can assist Sierra College faculty with providing opportunities for work-site tours.
How can work-site tours benefit Sierra College faculty?
Businesses host a classroom of students providing an overview of the organizations jobs, products, and services. Business partners have the opportunity to be involved in the direct teaching of students bringing the classroom to life. Work-site tours help students make a link between the classroom and their education and career goals.
The Career Connections staff will be happy to assist you with business work-site connections.
Students must log into one or both of the software-based databases and find particular pieces of information about certain careers (either their choice or yours, in keeping with your subject). These databases are available in Career Connections AND on-line for ease of access. Students can print out a report on the career encompassing over twenty information points such as salary, education level required, employment outlook, skills needs etc. Again, you can come up with your own personalized assignment, borrow and adapt one of ours or use a “ready-made” one available through Career Connections.
Career Connections has a library of over 500 career-related books and publications; most are available for a two-week checkout. Students read a book of their choice then prepare a written or oral report on the basic information.
Most instructors using this assignment require students to use three to five sources from Career Connections to conduct a more thorough research paper on a field, industry or career.
