Request for Dependency Override

Some students encounter extenuating circumstances that may warrant the student being considered "Independent" for financial aid purposes. If you believe you are in a situation that would make you independent, a dependency override may be processed and you would not be required to provide parental information on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or other financial aid records.

Extenuating circumstances that warrant a dependency override may include, but are not limited to, an abusive family environment or abandonment by parents.

The conditions listed below, singly or in combination, DO NOT qualify as unusual circumstances meriting a dependency override.

  1. Your parents refuse or are unable (due to other financial obligations or burdens) to contribute to your education.
  2. Your parents are unwilling to provide information on the FAFSA; they are unwilling to provide tax forms or W-2s for review of FAFSA data.
  3. Your parents do not claim you as a dependent for income tax purposes.
  4. You demonstrate total self-sufficiency.

If you feel your situation warrants a dependency override, please complete the following actions.

  1. Print and complete the Dependency Override Request form located on our website under forms or from our office. Please follow the instructions on this form before turning your request in for consideration.
  2. Complete and sign a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), leaving parent information blank. You may process the FAFSA on the web at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov or submit a paper FAFSA with your Request for Dependency Override.

Submission of the Request for Dependency Override does not guarantee your situation will warrant Independent Status. Additional supporting documentation may be required upon review of your request in order for the Financial Aid Program Manager to make a determination as to your status for filing the FAFSA.
